 Portland Wind Symphony strives to enrich the lives of our musicians and the community with music. For the community, we provide concerts for the whole family and perform a wide range of musical selections. For our musicians, we offer musical expression and growth with a community of talent, a challenging repertoire, and professional-quality performances

We are seeking applicants who are interested in working with the Portland Wind Symphony as our Conductor/Artistic Director to produce professional level performances for our community while collaborating with our wider community including: local high school band programs, musicians/music educators in the area, and performing in communities that are underserved by arts and music programs in the region.

Position Details
The conductor/artistic director has full responsibility over technical and artistic aspects of the ensemble including (but not limited to):
  • Programming and music selection for the concert season
  • Managing rehearsals
  • Conducting performances
  • Assignment of parts and solos
  • Assignment of the associate conductor
  • Musical and artistic interpretation of all parts

The regular performance season, including rehearsals, is September through the second week of June, with the possibility of rehearsals starting earlier.
  • There are typically 4-5 concerts in the regular season
  • The summer season starts after the regular season finale
  • Each regular season concert has 4 standard rehearsals, 1 dress rehearsal, and the concert.
    • Standard rehearsals are Monday from 7:30-9:30 PM, typically the 4 Mondays prior to a concert
    • Dress rehearsals are Friday 7:30-9:30 PM, typically the Friday prior to the concert
    • Concerts are typically on Sundays at 3:00 PM

The Conductor will receive as remuneration a stipend of $1,600 per concert.
  • $200 per rehearsal
  • $600 per concert

Note: The conductor acts as a subcontractor to the Wind Symphony and is therefore solely responsible for his/her reporting and withholding of personal income to the various taxing agencies, federal, state, and local.

After the closing date, the Board of Directors will review application packages and select candidates to interviews. Candidates chosen to audition for the position will be asked to program and run one entire concert series with the ensemble (4 standard rehearsals, 1 dress rehearsal, and 1 concert).
